“It has long been the mission of the SFS to share its music with the widest possible audience. New developments in audio and video technology now offer possibilities of what the concert experience can be. We believe that these offer many opportunities to reach out to new audiences, especially young audiences, who may never have attended the symphony before. With this in mind we are converting a backstage rehearsal space in Davies Symphony Hall into a new experimental venue to explore new kinds of programming and audience experiences. A wide variety of events will be produced in this space curated by composers, conductors and Symphony musicians, making use of new possibilities of audio and video. We imagine that creative use of new technology and flexible seating could encourage interesting interactions and collaborations between artists and audiences in what would be a kind of musical meeting house. This new space would be a wonderful new asset in our desire to better connect with the emerging community of Hayes Valley and beyond.”
